Abstract

We adopted a cross-sectional research design and hierarchical multiple regression analysis to investigate whether age, emotional intelligence, awareness, and communication are correlated with experiencing marital satisfaction among military personnel. Participants were 399 volunteered military personnel purposively drawn from the South-South region of Nigerian military barracks. The participants were administered off-line self-reported and validated measures: Marital Satisfaction, Emotional Intelligence, Awareness, and Communication scales. Four objectives were stated and thereafter tested as hypotheses. According to the results, age negatively predicted marital satisfaction such that being older was associated with less marital satisfaction among the military. Emotional intelligence positively predicted marital satisfaction. Greater awareness was associated with increased marital satisfaction. While responsive communication positively predicted marital satisfaction, blocked communication negatively did. It was
concluded that age, emotional intelligence, awareness, and communication (responsive) are keys to marital satisfaction amidst the seemingly martially dissatisfying kind of military deployment.
